A big concern about plant-based diets is its sufficiency for a healthy and fit body. "I need my protein!" is a common refrain among fitness enthusiasts.
Running is one of my sports, and it is easy to measure one's fitness level in it quite objectively. No, I do not have Nike Vaporfly or other "enhancement" shoes. I have been vegan since January 2021, and here are my running speeds and distances in November 2025.
Even though I am in my late 30's now, I am a lot faster than I ever have been. I have a balanced diet with no need for protein supplements. Unless of course, one considers jars of peanut butter to be protein supplements. I do not claim that the plant-based diet is solely responsible for my improved pace. My much more modest claim is that a plant-based diet is sufficient for amateur athletes such as me. It may be sufficient for you as well!
